Heatmaps

A visual overview of your site: popular pages, how engaging they are, where visitors click, busy times and common journeys.

Open Heatmaps in the sidebar for a visual overview of the selected site. Choose the last 7, 30 or 90 days, All time, or custom dates with the date button.

Page map

Every page is a tile, sized by how many visitors it had, so the most popular pages stand out. Tiles are shaded by the measure you pick:

  • Time on page: how long people spend on it before moving to another page. Time is measured up to the next page, so a page that visitors always leave the site from shows "no time recorded".
  • Conversion rate: the share of the page's visitors who went on to complete a goal.
  • Entrances: how often the page is where a visit starts.
  • Scroll depth: how far down the page visitors get, on average. Pages without scroll data in the period are shown grey.

Click a page to see its visitors, page views, time on page, entrances and conversions, where visitors came from and where they went to next (including how many entered or left the site there), and its scroll depth: the share of views that got 25% down, halfway, 75% down and to the end of the page.

Scroll depth is recorded as each visitor leaves a page, so a visit is counted once they've moved on or closed the tab.

Query strings are ignored, so /pricing?ref=ad counts as /pricing.

Click heatmaps on the live page

From a page's details, choose View desktop, View tablet or View mobile to open the real page in a new tab with a heatmap drawn over it, for the dates you have selected. Each button shows how many clicks were recorded.

  • Clicks shows where visitors clicked: the hotter the colour, the more clicks. Clicks are tied to the element that was clicked, so they stay in place if the layout shifts or your window is a different width.
  • Scroll shades the page by how many visitors scrolled that far, with lines where 75%, 50% and 25% of them stopped.

Use the toolbar at the bottom to switch between them, hide the overlay, or close it (or press Esc). Make the window the right size for the device you're viewing: over 1024px wide for desktop, 768–1023px for tablet and under 768px for mobile. The toolbar tells you if it doesn't match.

Some clicks may be on things that aren't visible right now, such as a closed menu or a pop-up, or on content that has since changed; the toolbar says how many.

The link works for 30 minutes and isn't counted as a visit. Clicks are recorded from visits after the tracker update in October 2026, so older periods have no click data. Sonar records where a click landed, never the text on the page or anything typed.

When people visit

A grid of visitors by day of the week and hour of the day, shaded darker where it's busier, in your own time zone. The busiest hour is called out above it, useful for timing campaigns, posts and chat cover.

Top journeys

The most common first pages of a visit, such as / → /services/ → /our-work/, with how many visits followed each path. Reloading a page doesn't count as a new step.
